From Sketch to Gospel Chat

J drew a picture of a person sitting under a tree with a book. Later, J and I (B) were walking around the skatepark area at East Coast Park when we noticed a woman sitting alone under a tree, looking at her phone, similar to the drawing. We decided to approach her. J started the conversation by giving her the picture card. She seemed cautious at first, but after receiving it, she became more relaxed and open to talking with us. She shared that she is an atheist and did not feel the need for religion when she was younger. Recently, however, she has started to think more about it, partly influenced by her mother’s Buddhist beliefs. She said she is still exploring and not deeply involved. She also mentioned that she feels all religions are similar in that they encourage people to do good. We asked why she felt the need to explore religion now. She said that as she went through life, she began to reflect more on such questions. She also shared that her sister-in-law is a Christian and a virtuous person, which gave her a positive impression of Christianity. J and I shared about God’s unconditional love, referencing John 3:16, and we explained that while doing good is important, it is also important to consider what happens after death. J brought up Romans 6:23 and explained the concept of sin and its consequences. We asked if she knew where she would go after she passed on, and she said she did not know, even if she tried to do good. I asked whether she experienced peace when doing her chanting, and she replied that she felt some level of peace. J then shared that true peace comes from Jesus, referencing Isaiah 9:6, and explained that this peace brings assurance and security. She explained that salvation is not based on good works but on belief in Jesus, and that this gives assurance of being with Him after death. J also played an audio of Psalm 23 in Chinese for her. We prayed for her, and she was open to it. Before leaving, we encouraged her to visit a church near her home and gave her a Cornerstone Community Church service card.
